The Ambassadors for the ERC Programme met to review a successful first year that had a significant impact across EU Member States and Associated Countries. Over the past twelve months, the Programme has developed into a structured support system for frontier research, strengthening national research environments and aligning them with ERC standards.

During the meeting on the 23rd of April, participants reviewed key achievements and discussed future objectives. Across various countries, Ambassadors raised awareness of ERC opportunities, mentored applicants, collaborated with institutions, and contributed to policy discussions.

A key development in the first year was the shift from general outreach to direct support for applicants. Ambassadors provided one-to-one mentoring, mock interviews, feedback on proposals, and strategic advice. Close collaboration with National Contact Points was essential, including joint workshops, applicant support, and the development of national strategies.

The Programme also strengthened ERC communities through national networks, regular meetings, and online exchanges. Communication expanded via social media, podcasts, media appearances, and public outreach. In its first year, the Programme organised approximately 80 workshops, info days, and webinars. Over 150 researchers received individual mentoring, 60 mock interviews and proposal reviews were conducted, and more than 30 activities involved policymakers and ministries.

The meeting also established future priorities. These include expanding structured mentoring programmes, strengthening collaboration with NCPs, growing ERC-grantee peer networks, and increasing engagement with policymakers as FP10 negotiations progress.

The first year demonstrated the Ambassadors' value to the ERC Programme in supporting excellence, improving applications, and strengthening research communities across Europe.
