The European Research Council (ERC) has launched its first-ever ERC Plus grant call, offering up to €7 million per project for ambitious, long-term frontier research initiatives.

In a recent article published by Science|Business examining the opportunities and challenges of the new scheme, Axel Cleeremans, President of the Association of ERC Grantees (AERG), shared his views on the opportunities offered by ERC Plus grants and the broader funding landscape for frontier research.

We welcome any new funding instrument that makes it possible for frontier scientists to develop and test their ideas,” he said on behalf of the Association of ERC Grantees (AERG).

At the same time, Cleeremans stressed the need for greater investment in research funding. “In this light, we must continue to call for a doubling of the ERC budget and for increased public support for frontier science in Europe and elsewhere,” he said.
